Day 5

Visit the Clay Lick and return to Sani Lodge

This excursion takes place early in the morning, because you want to get to the clay lick as early as possible. It is one of the best adventures in the jungle to visit the Lamederos or Saladeros (Parrot Lick), where there is a large concentration of different species of parrots and macaws and few predators live in the area. The parrots feed on the clay of the mineral-rich soil, which helps them digest and detoxifies them from the toxins in their main diet. Such places are unique in the Amazon rainforest as they offer a great chance to see a wide range of Amazon animal species. Later, return to Sani Lodge to extend your stay.

Day 6

Lake Challuacocha and Chorongo Trail

After breakfast, observe life in the treetops from the 36-meter observation tower. To get there, your naturalist guides will paddle on Lake Challuacocha for 30 minutes, followed by a short 10-minute walk. So far, over 565 species of birds have been recorded, including colorful birds such as macaws, toucans, bee honeyeaters, tanagers, flycatchers, hummingbirds, and if you are lucky, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys or sloths resting in the treetops. The tower gives you a unique perspective and opens up a whole new world of Amazon biodiversity that is often difficult or impossible to see from the understory. The journey continues with exploration of the nearby trails in search of more Amazonian creatures on the Chorongo trail, a 5-hour walk through the deep tropical rainforest.
