Highlands of San Cristóbal Island
Today’s land tour explores the highlands of San Cristóbal: its historic beginnings as a farming community in the village of El Progreso, to start. Learn about the sugar mill, legend of Manuel J. Cobos and the lush farms filled with fruit trees and more. Next, it’s time to stretch your legs at El Junco lagoon! Trek up wooden stairs takes you to a look-out of the undeveloped areas of this fertile zone: miconia bushes, Frigates and maybe even Petrels. Hike around the only freshwater source of the island, an often misty and dreamlike atmosphere. Continuing to the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center, walk among these gentle giants endemic to the island of Chatham (San Cristóbal) as the mockingbirds sing from the trees above. Lunch is being prepared in the traditional manner on our family farm, El Trinar, (Birdsong). A short hike among the fertile lands that offer an abundance of flowers, fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables, as well as a demonstration of the organic coffee process that takes place here: from bean to cup you’ll learn how the Arabica plants have been cultivated for generations. After a hearty and flavorful lunch, relax in a hammock, with the sounds of birds all around. We’ll return to town in time for the sunset.
